Album of the Month: Steve Tyrell's "The Disney Standard"

If you are fan of the whole Rod Stewart type of standard covers, then you will be pleased to here there are others out there doing it and doing it a lot better. Steve Tyrell for example. I don't actually remember what type of music was his claim to fame, but needless to say he is very suited to this type of music. He has put out quite a number of albums filled with lush renditions of many wonderful classics and this one is no exception. Through the years, Disney has produced some of the most beautiful and memorable pieces of music and on this album they take center stage! Mr. Tyrell covers the Disney classics "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" which have been done a thousand times. Unique to the album, however, are the best tunes. My favorite is "Baby Mine" which also happens to be the oldest tune, which is from the film Dumbo... This soft melody is so touching and is sung just so simply, not over produced... quite beautiful. I also love "Bella Notte" the song from Lady and Tramp whenever the two dogs are eating the spaghetti. I almost forgot how beautiful this song is. Steve also has some fun with renditions of "Cruella De Vil" from 101 Dalmations and "Kiss the Girl" from the Little Mermaid. Although the songs I've mentioned are my favorite, every one of the tunes on the album is noteworthy, but I'll let you discover your own favorite... It was released in Febuary '06, so you should be able to get it in any record store. Pick it up!

Personal Shopper at GIANT EAGLE

Ok, this is like my dream come true. I walked into the Giant Eagle on Centre Ave, you know the one... all billboards are calling it the "Market District" Giant Eagle... its a super fancy grocery store that gets to charge an extra dollar for macaroni and cheese. ANYWAY... I walk in and they have this panel of hand-held scanners on the wall... I am draw to this display like flies to my dog's shit and I have to find out what is going on. So I watch the little info-merical they have playing on a LCD screen in the middle of all of these devices. Apparently, you can fill your cart with empty bags and walk around the grocery store and scan and bag everything right then and never have to "check-out". You have a little screen on the scan-gun that lets you see the running total and if you have an coupons, you can scan them too! WOW! This is the grocery store of the future... only.. now. So I go about my shopping and get all of things that I wanted to buy and of course a few extra things, because I shopped when I was hungry... All the while, my little scanner was telling me how much I was spending. So when I was done getting everything I needed, I was a little perplexed on how I go about paying for everything... After all, I had all of my groceries bagged up already, I could just waltz right out of the store. But I am honest and I guess I looked like a lost dog, because this energetic young woman with horrible garlic breath asked me if I needed help and I told her I was done, while showing her the scanner in my hand... She told me to follow her and we down to the last lane which is just a little stand with a screen.. you scan your "Giant Eagle Advantage Card" and it brings up everything you've purchased and I paid my bill... Wow that was cool. All the while, my little brain is just wondering how in the heck does the Giant Eagle know that I've paid for everything in my bags!!! So I asked the girl who really was talking very close to me and serverely needed a tic tac how did they know that I paid for everything and she told me that they do a random scan of about every tenth customers who use the Scan-Gun system... And if the items they scan aren't on your receipt you get banned from the system!!! So like what if a small apple or something fell into my bag or someone stuck a can of soup in cart to try and set me up! No worry she said, you have TEN TRIES!!! So I have to have more than ten stolen items in my card to get banned! Jeez.... This seems like highway robbery. So really I'm guessing that if you are lucky enough to not get a random search and scan, which I believe could possibly be against my constitutional rights... I'll look into this later... Then you could skate out of there with hundreds of dollars of free groceries... We'll have to see if this system takes off. Discuss.
